Golden Lodge Christmas Baskets
On Dec. 14, the
Golden Elks met at their Lodge to put together Christmas baskets
for families in the Golden area that needed a little help.
We helped 40 families this year, a record for us. We always
have a pot luck dinner to eat after the baskets are assembled.
This is a family
affair and all the food and presents, we give at least one
gender and age appropriate gift for each child in the family,
is donated by our members. This year we also received a donation
from Wal-Mart of $1,000 for our baskets.
We give a turkey
or a ham with each basket and fresh fruit and vegetables,
and canned goods, bread, sugar, flour, marshmallows for a
meal and some goods to last for a few more days.
The baskets are
picked up by the recipients or delivered the next day.
Our Drug Awareness chairman Ed Utsch made up a bag with drug
awareness materials for each family also.

Leadville Lodge Plays Important Role
in New Memorial
At the 11th hour
on the 11th day of the 11th month, Lake County Commissioner
Mike Hickman welcomed a large crowd to “a Veterans Day
celebration unlike any we’ve seen.”
Attendees spilled out of the stands and formed a circle around
the new memorial, as veterans from each of the last five wars
that America has been involved in recalled their years of
fighting for America. Ed O’Leary represented World War
II, Bob Hahn represented the Korean War, Jeff Ollinger represented
the Vietnam War, Doug Cecil represented Operation Desert Storm
and Capt. Phil Woodward represented Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Ollinger went so far as to synthesize his experience into
a series of lessons he felt he’d learned through the
experience of fighting in a dangerous and unpopular war. “
The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” he said,
recalling Roosevelt’s words; “ other people’s
views are not what really counts,” and “ it’s
in the trying; it’s not in the winning.”
Captain Woodward spoke of the pain of losing a fellow soldier,
saying to Brad and Rachele Palmer, who recently lost their
son in Operation Iraqi Freedom: “ I don’t know
how you’ll ever get over this.”
Several elected officials spoke next. State Director Renny
Fagan read a letter from United States Senator Salazar, and
State Senator Tom Wiens, State Representative Dan Gibbs and
Lake County Commissioner Ken Olsen all said a few words.
Wiens and Gibbs called the Palmers up to the podium, explaining
that the two had called for a flag to be flown over the State
Capitol in honor of Lance Cpl. Nicklas J. Palmer, their son.
Olsen discussed the history of the site, upon which once existed
both the Union Veteran’s Hospital and the Union Veteran’s
Cemetery. He said that 127 years ago, Ulysses S. Grant visited
the site ( and Leadville) for five days, on the invitation
of the Union Veterans’ Association.
At the end of his history lesson, he explained that history
itself is the best reminder that Lake County’s accomplishment
in creating the memorial and the graditude it has expressed
to veterans will also, one day, be history.

Elks Celebrate Veteran’s Day
with a Parade
Saturday Nov.
10th the Colorado Elks from around the State joined together
to honor our Nation’s Veterans with the Denver Veteran’s
Day Parade. The Day was beautiful and I believe that is why
we had such a large crowd out to see the parade this year.
While in the staging area I heard a lot of discussion about
the protesters allowed in the parade this year. I believe
and I think most others did too, that is why we served, to
protect our freedoms. So despite the politics everyone was
welcome. You know there are not many countries you can protest
like that without some serious consequences.
The route was a little shorter than in years past, only about
a mile, so it wasn’t too hard of a walk on us old guys.
We had representatives from Central City, ER Jim Stewart and
his new (3weeks) bride drove the pickup with the Drug Awareness
Trailer. Past State President Bob Schmitz and his wife Barb
drove their vintage Ford Mustang with their daughter Becky
who was the co-chairman of the Elks Veterans Day Parade, so
they represented Westminster and Northglenn Lodges. Dennis
Gade and his lady from Aurora did duty as Elroy the Elk and
was a big hit all along the route getting his picture taken
and visiting all the kids. We had Jim Vitale, PDDGER and co-chairman
of the Veterans Day Parade and co-chairman of the State Veterans
Service Committee, who helped carry the Colorado Elks Banner,
and Wayne Rogers, State Veterans Hide Chairman, who was on
the other end of the banner, and his wife Jeannette who took
pictures, and his son Patrick, Kim Blatter, Tiler of Golden
Lodge all representing Golden. We had 4 members of Englewood
Lodge and the Englewood Antlers there helping to pass out
lollipops and brochures of the Clem Audin Committee, the Veterans
Hide Committee, and Drug Awareness Coloring books and pencils.
Carrying the banner besides wearing our Elks stuff we each
had a hat on for the service we were in, which the 3 of us
covered the Navy, the Army Special Forces, and the Air Force.
We all had a great time and we get a little more participation
each year, maybe next year you will join us.
So Long as there are Veteran’s, the Elks will Never
Forget Them!

Victor Lodge cleans Elks Rest
The Victor Elks
successfully completed their Victor Elks Rest Cemetery Clean-Up
Project on Saturday May 19th. This project is important as
we honor Victor Elks who have passed and now rest surrounded
by the mountains and valleys we so love.
Nature had taken its toll on Elks Rest and the crew worked
hard resetting stones, removing weeds, mowing grass, painting
the entry gate and cables, and placing the flags so generously
donated by the Colorado Springs Elks Lodge. Many compliments
were received from visiting family and friends of these past
Elks.

Western Slope Elks Do a Bang Up at
the Winter Sports Clinic
Again this year
the Mountain District had the distinct pleasure of helping
with the festivities at the Basalt Gun Range and the disabled
veterans who have served our country and given so very much
of themselves for our freedom. We have included just a few
of the photo's and invite you to go to Rifleelks2195.org to
see more of this event. Some of the dignitaries that showed
up were Dennis , the Elks National Hides Chairman, The secretary
of the Veterans Affairs, Jack Nicholson and his secret service
agents. Glen White, President V V A chapter 57 and his wife
and the most important of all, our Veterans who have given
so much. We salute them. The members of Rifle, Aspen, Glenwood
Springs did so much of the work providing meals for the "Miracles
on the Mountain" program. And a big thanks for the help
the members of the Eastern Slope for getting our Vets out
to the Western Slope. Just as a side we include part of the
menu, organized by Steve White, the mountain district Veterans
Service Commission Chair. And the menu reads: elk steaks and
stew, moose, buffalo, salmon, halibut, green and red chili,
beans (deliciously safe to eat in the great outdoors) wieners,
brats, hamburgers and cheeseburgers, barbequed chicken and
pheasant, barbequed spareribs, homemade potato salad, and
homemade deserts (that make you blow whatever kind of diet
you thought you might be on).

CEA donates to the Homeless Veterans Program

| |
"THANK YOU
COLORADO ELKS" |
|
Those
are the words of gratitude spoken by Debbie and Terry Fowler,
pictured above, when CEA 2nd VP Ray and Amie Ross delivered
almost 100 pounds of clothing, non-perishable food items,
and miscellaneous toiletries to the Homeless Veterans Program
office at the Colorado Springs VA Clinic. The items were
donated by the members of the Colorado Elks Association
who attended the winter quarterly held January 26-28, 2007
at the Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs. Debbie Fowler,
manager of the Homeless Veterans Program, said, "We
can't thank the Colorado Elks enough for this. This is absolutely
wonderful! Our Veterans can especially use the warm clothing
with the weather as cold as it is."
The idea of the members of the Colorado Elks Association
doing something for Veterans in the Colorado Springs area
during the winter quarterly came from Marilyn Arrick, wife
of CEA President Tom Arrick. Marilyn wanted a special theme
for the quarterly, and she and 2nd VP Ray Ross, who also
is the VAVS Representative for Colorado Springs Lodge 309,
coordinated and decided on a clothing and food drive as
a way that many CEA members could be involved. The drive
was successful and helped remind our Veterans that 'Elks
Care, Elks Share.' Thank you Marilyn. And, thank you Colorado
Elks.

National Western Stock Show
Vickie Uhland,
Barbara Davenport and Mary Beth Frakes man the stock show
booth, The booth is in the coliseum near the front entrance
and right next to portal 15 to the rodeo arena. The booth
is also handing out Drug Awareness materials and Elks information.
There is also a section of the booth that deals with Veterans
programs. The Veterans Hide program is on on display here
and Veterans gloves are being distributed. There are many
posters on display showing the involvement of the Elks and
their other programs. Laradon Hall is a prominent part of
the booth and many of its programs. The Association members
at the booth have had a opportunity to visit with Elks and
potential Elks from across the county. The stock show is a
great exposure for the Colorado Elks Association and Elks
nation wide as there are many visitors from all across the
country to o this event.
Bob Byron and
Sheril Wynn are overseeing the day to day activities at the
booth. John Galvin and Barbara Davenport are helping on a
daily basis. Members from several different lodges are staffing
the booth. If you have some spare time, come on down to the
stock show and spend some time in the booth. Just tell the
people at the gate that you need to pick up your badge at
the elks booth. Hope to see several of you at the booth. |
